Class

This seven-week class will meet on Mondays: July 20, 27, August 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31. This class includes five sessions of instruction, and in the final two sessions we will invite actors to perform your play.

Playwriting allows writers to tell stories using a unique medium–live performance. This class reviews the fundamentals of narrative structure, with a focus on the creation of a ten-minute play. The principles we learn can be applied to full-length works as well. Just click your ruby heels together and say: “there’s no place like a theater”.

The first session covers an overview of the key elements of narrative structure. In the following sessions, participants will present outlines, discuss their work in a collaborative and supportive space, writing and rewriting until the end of the class, when each student playwright will have completed their own ten-minute play.

To make the most out of this class, participants should continue working on their plays between each session, using our time together for discussion and feedback.
