Sewing Basics: Quilt Top Edition

This three-week class meets on Thursdays, August 13, 20, and 27.
Ready to try quilting without the overwhelm? This beginner-friendly class breaks it down step-by-step so you can confidently create your own beautiful, one-of-a-kind quilt top. You’ll get comfortable using a sewing machine while learning the essentials—machine safety, how it works, threading, bobbins, and straight stitching—plus the tools and techniques that make sewing easier from the start.
Then bring it all together as you learn quilting fundamentals like maintaining a consistent ¼” seam allowance, properly pressing seams, and using a rotary cutter and ruler to cut clean, precise blocks. No experience needed—just come ready to learn, connect, and create something you’ll be proud of.
About the Instructors
Jennifer Nicolella has been sewing for over 25 years. She trained as a chemist and a high school math teacher, but her absolute passion is sewing. Jen loves to combine her teaching experience with her love of all things sewing and crafting, plus throw in some mad nerd skills when she can. Jen’s favorite part of teaching people how to sew is seeing the satisfaction and smiles on their faces when they declare, “I did this!” In her free time (hah!) she enjoys camping, bike riding and, of course, sewing.
Lisa Tobias has been teaching quilting classes, kids classes, and Sewing 101 for Abby’s Attic since October 2020. She is also a high school science teacher at Texas Military Institute, but has been teaching science since 2000. Mrs. Tobias was named Teacher of the Year in 2017-2018 while she worked at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic School. In her free time she loves to sew quilts and clothing, and lets her pets hang out at her feet while she sits at her sewing machine.
McKenna Seiger is a 2025 graduate from the University of the Incarnate Word, majoring in both fashion design and apparel product development. She loves to spend time outside with her dog, Saylor. She has been an instructor at Abby’s Attic since 2024.
