This 4-week class will meet on Mondays: March 24, (Skip March 31), April 7, (Skip April 14), April 21, and April 28.

Explore the power of storytelling through photography and sound in Our Family, Our Story—a hands-on creative workshop designed for beginners and experienced artists alike. Over four engaging sessions, you’ll experiment with still life and portrait photography, as well as sound art, to capture the essence of identity, memory, and connection. Whether you’re documenting meaningful artifacts, playing with lighting and composition, or weaving soundscapes into your work, this class provides a supportive space to express yourself. No experience is needed—this program is designed for anyone eager to explore visual storytelling.

All equipment is provided, along with snacks to fuel your creativity. Free two-hour parking is available on 14th Street and surrounding areas, with additional paid parking in the nearby Tailgate Lot. If parking is a barrier, please reach out for assistance.

This program is supported in part by Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, and managed by Mid-America Arts Alliance.

About the Instructors

Natalie Devitt (she/her) brings her background in television, film, and media to her work with Outside the Lens, where she combines her love of storytelling with hands-on education. A San Diego State University graduate, Natalie has worked in schools across the region, helping students find their creative voices. Outside of teaching, she’s an avid record collector, guitarist, and lover of midnight movies.

Eiram Torres (they/them) is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply rooted in arts integration and social justice. Growing up in Tijuana, they use their art to challenge cultural narratives and inspire others to explore identity through creative expression.

Franchesca Avila (she/her) is a Coast Guard veteran and graduate student at SDSU, currently working on an advanced photography project. A multidisciplinary artist, she blends photography with graphic design, craft, and poetry to create work that reflects personal moments, light, and her love of vintage crystal.

This class is produced in partnership with Outside The Lens.
