Military Culture

Deepen your understanding of military culture, extending beyond the branches and acronyms. Learn best practices to ensure that veterans, service members, families, caregivers, and survivors can thrive through the arts. 

Facilitated by: Bryan Bales, M.Sc., Professional Trainer & Facilitator on Veteran Cultural Competencies

Bryan Bales is a Marine Corps veteran with 12 years’ experience in leadership, training, instructing and managing programs in higher education and government agencies.

Suicide Prevention Resources and Tools

Develop your own Crisis Response Plan and put it into practice. Review ASAP’s emergency protocol and additional resources for supporting the military community.

Design Thinking for Creative Expression

Gain a structured framework to brainstorm and develop meaningful solutions to common teaching challenges. 

Facilitated by: Luz Helena Thompson, Expressive Arts Educator, Path with Art

Luz Helena Thompson is a Colombian artist, Expressive Arts Educator, and Marine Corps veteran. With a background in Exercise Science and a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Science, she has leveraged her expertise to develop innovative approaches to healing and recovery.

This training was fantastic. The material was spot-on and relevant. 
I was awed by the brilliant people surrounding me during our short weekend together.
The Military Culture session was insightful and valid to me as a veteran as well as me as a dependent of a veteran.
Being with everyone, learning with everyone, was like being enveloped in a warm ASAP hug. No wonder I love this organization.

Travel

Parking & Transportation

Find W&M Washington Center transportation and parking garage recommendations here. ASAP will reimburse for public transit or parking costs. Send receipts to [email protected].

For Out-of-Town Instructors

Travel

Instructors are responsible for booking their own travel. ASAP will reimburse. Email all receipts to [email protected]. 

Flight / Train: Instructors should book flights / train tickets by December 20. Keep flights under $500 roundtrip. 

Car: ASAP will reimburse for mileage (IRS rate of $0.67 per mile) for those driving from Hampton Roads. Email # of miles traveled (including before / after photos of odometer) to [email protected]. Hotel parking will be covered by ASAP.

Local Travel: ASAP will reimburse for local travel to the hotel from the airport or train station — public transportation (recommended) or Lyft / Uber.

ASAP will book + pay for hotel accommodations for up to two nights (Jan 31 & Feb 1).
