The French made it sound very fancy, but “en plein air” just means in the open air, and is really a very casual and fun way to learn to really observe nature and our environment and record it on paper and canvas. Find out what it’s all about in this beginners class at beautiful Fort Monroe. With stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay, Old Point Comfort Lighthouse, historic homes, and pedestrians, it’s the perfect place to explore the possibilities.

All watercolor art supplies will be included, but you are welcome to bring any specific media you prefer, as well as the following: a water bottle, sunscreen, a hat, bug spray, a camping chair, personal snacks.

About the Instructor

After earning her BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design and getting her feet wet in advertising, Karen Spaulding ran her own freelance graphic design business for over 20 years while raising her children. She has explored the decorative arts, from murals, portraits, and pen and ink commissions to custom-painted roof slates and floor cloths. In 2024, she opened the 110 Gallery in Phoebus, the historic arts district of Hampton, representing Virginia artists in the front, while the back half serves as a pottery studio and artisan workshop. Karen is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, Virginia Watercolor Society, Virginia Plein Air Painters, Chesapeake Bay Watercolorists and Newport News Urban Sketchers and serves on the Hampton Arts Foundation.
