The Armed Services Arts Partnership, or ASAP, is a fast-growing, entrepreneurial organization creating communities where veterans and their families thrive through the arts. As the nation’s largest military-arts organization, we’re addressing social isolation and mental health challenges within the military-connected community. Our programs leverage the arts as a powerful set of tools to move through questions of identity, community, tragedy, purpose, loss, and war. Through the arts, ASAP graduates gain new tools for self-understanding and self-expression, then share their new talents with supportive audiences, ultimately empowering participants to feel seen, heard, and known.  

4,000 military-connected individuals representing all 50 states have graduated from our free classes since 2015. Peer-reviewed research demonstrates ASAP participants experience significant, lasting improvements in social connectivity, resilience, self-esteem, and integration of self. Our alumni have performed for 250,000 audience members at venues like The Kennedy Center, Carolines on Broadway, Warner Theater, and The White House. ASAP has been featured by CNN, ABC, NBC, PBS, NPR, The Washington Post, POLITICO, and Forbes.


Position Summary

ASAP is seeking candidates who have an interest in expanding arts programming to the military community in the greater San Diego area. 

The Community Outreach Coordinator will collaborate closely with ASAP’s Program Director and Program Coordinators in the promotion of ASAP’s classes, workshops, and performances offered in San Diego. You will be the “face-of-ASAP” for the military community at-large and will develop partnerships with local arts partners and veteran / military organizations. In addition, the Community Outreach Coordinator will staff programs in the area, including graduation shows, open mics, first classes, and workshops. 

This is an hourly ($20/hour), part-time position, requiring up to 10 hours/week (not to exceed 30 hours monthly). Hours can fluctuate based on the schedule of programs, which mostly take place during evenings and weekends. Local travel required. ASAP will reimburse for mileage (IRS rate of $0.655 per mile).


Primary Responsibilities

  • Outreach and Promotion: Work to increase application numbers for ASAP’s classes, engaging members of the military community. This includes: Identifying local Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs), Military Service Organizations (MSOs), attending recurring meetings with these organizations, and developing relationships with key players. Visit military installations, military housing installations, military-owned businesses and military-frequented businesses and service providers to promote ASAP programs. Represent ASAP by attending resource fairs and other local events.
  • Maintain relationships with partners: Directly interface with instructors, volunteers, participants, classroom and performance venues, and other partners to effectively execute ASAP’s programs and performances.
  • Develop new partnerships: Explore local arts organizations and instructors, classroom/performance venues, colleges, VSOs and veteran owned/supportive-businesses to identify “goodness of fit” with ASAP’s mission.
  • Staff ASAP programs: Attend ASAP classes and workshops to check-in ASAP participants and give ASAP-introduction speech. Run graduation shows, including selling tickets, checking in with hosts / instructors, and introducing the show. 
  • Manage volunteers: Recruit volunteers to support outreach and promotion efforts as necessary. 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in event planning, communications and marketing, interest in the arts, veteran and military family affairs, mental health.
  • Entrepreneurial; capable of managing time effectively and efficiently, thrives in highly autonomous situations in which they have the opportunity to drive their own work.
  • Familiarity with arts organizations, military community/veterans support organizations and non-profit sector in San Diego. 
  • Ability to access local military installations. 
  • Proficiency in Google Workplace, Gmail, and Slack.
