SUMMARY:Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” – Rachel Carson \n\n\n\nNature Journaling is\, simply put\, recording and collecting your thoughts\, ideas\, questions\, and observations onto a page in your journal. You do not have to be an artist\, scientist\, or a poet to enjoy nature journaling. It is noticing life as it appears to you\, right now\, learning how to preserve your observations using words\, pictures\, and numbers\, and putting them down on paper in your journal. \n\n\n\nNature Journaling is a skill that\, like any skill\, will develop the more you practice it. It is a tool for learning to live more deeply. It can be learned at any age\, and will reward anyone who takes up the practice with a record of their days on this earth. All you need is a pencil\, a journal\, and an open mind. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor \n\n\n\nFor as long as he can remember\, James Todd has enjoyed being outside — whether squirrel hunting\, camping out beneath the stars\, or kayaking on a river or lake with his wife. He is a Master Naturalist through the Indiana DNR\, and a certified Nature Journal Educator through the Wild Wonder Foundation. James started nature journaling in 2022 and it has since become a regular practice and part of his life. After retiring from police work in 2011\, James now works as a personal trainer and boxing coach for Rock Steady Boxing\, which is an exercise program for people with Parkinson’s Disease. He also volunteers with the Central Indiana Land Trust as a White River Docent\, and with The Nature Conservancy as a Bison Ranger.

Originally from Florida\, Brad earned a Master’s in Architecture in Chicago\, which laid the foundation for a deep appreciation of design and craftsmanship. After many years working in the architecture field in San Antonio\, Brad expanded his passion for creative expression by opening Breva Creative Makerspace with his partner Eva. Breva Creative Makerspace is a thriving community hub dedicated to art and innovation\, with a full woodshop\, ceramic studio\, printmaking studio\, and digital fabrication lab. Brad teaches many art classes in the makerspace and uses his downtime to create art and expand his skills. \n\n\n\nAs a child\, Eva Shaefer loved drawing figures and fashion designs and filled her elective schedule with as many art classes as possible. She later majored in Architecture\, which she viewed as art on a larger\, more constructive scale. While her current passion is ceramics\, particularly mid- to large-scale pieces\, she is continually exploring new mediums and techniques. Although she finds great satisfaction in the finished piece\, it is the creative process itself that inspires her most.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare 101
DESCRIPTION:Step into the world of Shakespeare through an engaging\, hands-on exploration of his language with Virginia Stage Company’s Perry Producing Artistic Director Tom Quaintance. This workshop will guide you through the process of bringing Shakespeare’s words to life\, beginning with strategies for breaking down and understanding the text. \n\n\n\nWe’ll cover the fundamentals of iambic pentameter and scansion\, with a focus on recognizing and working with how rhythm\, stress\, and verse structure can open up a character’s intention. You’ll learn to discover the clues Shakespeare poured into the language\, and how to avoid the traps that make it sound old timey instead of action packed. \n\n\n\nWe’ll end the day with a short ensemble performance\, giving participants the opportunity to practice their new skills. Whether new to Shakespeare or looking to strengthen existing experience\, you’ll leave with greater confidence\, stronger text analysis tools\, and a deeper appreciation for the power and accessibility of Shakespeare’s work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor \n\n\n\nTom Quaintance is Producing Artistic Director of Virginia Stage Company. He has directed more Shakespeare than any other author\, with VSC’s Henry V his 18th production. “Shakespeare is the best theatre teacher in history\,” Tom says. “If you can act Shakespeare\, you can act anything.” When he was a 20-year-old usher at the Guthrie Theatre he saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream a dozen times\, his mind blown that Shakespeare could be funny\, surprising and sexy. \n\n\n\n\nThis class is produced in partnership with Virginia Stage Company.
