SUMMARY:Songwriting Basics
DESCRIPTION:This four-week class will meet on Saturdays: May 30\, June 6\, 20\, and 27 (skipping June 13). \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a shredder\, a soulful vocalist\, or a pocket-heavy drummer\, it’s time to move beyond playing other people’s hits and start crafting your own. \n\n\n\nThis class is designed for musicians — guitarists\, bassists\, keyboardists\, vocalists\, or drummers — who want to master the art of the song. Whether your heart beats for the grit of Rock n’ Roll\, the groove of R&B\, the storytelling of Country\, or a genre-bending style all your own\, we’ll teach your the method to the magic. \n\n\n\nWhat You’ll Discover \n\n\n\nOver four weeks\, we break down the “how” and “why” behind your favorite tracks. You’ll transition from having a simple riff or a lyric fragment to building a fully realized arrangement. \n\n\n\n\nThe Fundamentals: Master the essential building blocks of melody\, harmony\, and rhythm.\n\n\n\nSong Form: Learn how to use Verse\, Chorus\, and Bridge structures to keep your listeners hooked.\n\n\n\nThe Full Ensemble: Discover the secrets to “putting the instruments together” so every part has its own space to shine.\n\n\n\nGenre Techniques: Explore how different styles use the same musical tools to create vastly different emotional impacts.\n\n\n\n\nTo get the most of this class\, you should have some experience playing an instrument or formal vocal training. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructors \n\n\n\nWith a bass in hand since age nine\, Luis Trevino has dedicated his life to the craft of four strings. Luis’ approach to music education goes beyond notes on a page; he provides a holistic “bench-to-stage” mentorship. Luis’ time as an Instructor and Band Coach at the San Antonio Girls Rock Camp remains the most rewarding chapter of his career\, fueling his passion for fostering confidence and creativity in young musicians. Whether coaching a first-time band or preparing a student for the stage\, he brings a wealth of global experience—having performed everywhere from the Paris Jazz Festival to the Montreux Jazz Festival\, supporting legends like Victor Wooten and Sting. \n\n\n\nLucas Carillo\, aka Stan Leonard on stage\, is a seasoned musician and teacher at School of Rock San Antonio. He thrives at being a multi-instrumentalist\, teaching guitar\, bass guitar\, drums and singing. With over 16 years professional experience and more than 2\,000 live performances under his belt\, Lucas brings real world insight into every lesson and band rehearsal. In addition to teaching and playing music\, Lucas also works in studio as a session player\, producer and engineer. His studio credits include working with Moe & Tom and a feature on Mothica’s charting single “Burnout”\, among many others.

SUMMARY:Painting & Drawing in the Open Air (Plein Air)
DESCRIPTION:The French made it sound very fancy\, but “en plein air” just means in the open air\, and is really a very casual and fun way to learn to really observe nature and our environment and record it on paper and canvas. Find out what it’s all about in this beginners class at beautiful Fort Monroe. With stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay\, Old Point Comfort Lighthouse\, historic homes\, and pedestrians\, it’s the perfect place to explore the possibilities. \n\n\n\nAll watercolor art supplies will be included\, but you are welcome to bring any specific media you prefer\, as well as the following: a water bottle\, sunscreen\, a hat\, bug spray\, a camping chair\, personal snacks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor \n\n\n\nAfter earning her BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design and getting her feet wet in advertising\, Karen Spaulding ran her own freelance graphic design business for over 20 years while raising her children. She has explored the decorative arts\, from murals\, portraits\, and pen and ink commissions to custom-painted roof slates and floor cloths. In 2024\, she opened the 110 Gallery in Phoebus\, the historic arts district of Hampton\, representing Virginia artists in the front\, while the back half serves as a pottery studio and artisan workshop. Karen is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists\, Virginia Watercolor Society\, Virginia Plein Air Painters\, Chesapeake Bay Watercolorists and Newport News Urban Sketchers and serves on the Hampton Arts Foundation.

SUMMARY:Spray Paint Art
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a basic tutorial on using spray paint to make art! We’ll guide you through the process to create your own paintings on glossy card stock and stretched canvas. This workshop will take place outdoors so dress accordingly (and wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained). All materials will be provided\, including an N95 mask. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor \n\n\n\nJoe Gagliardi is a Marine Iraq War Veteran turned professional artist. Under his brand\, Ethereal Marine Art\, he creates 1 of 1\, unique spray paint art that appears differently depending on the light used to view the painting. His signature pieces involve invisible messages/meanings hidden within the painting that can only be viewed in certain lighting conditions. The difference in appearance is meant to invoke the internal mental/emotional struggles so many Vets encounter post-service\, often while appearing normal and healthy to the outside world. He’s sold over 100 paintings locally and worldwide since launching Ethereal Marine Art in the fall of 2022\, and lives in Annapolis with his wife and son. https://www.instagram.com/themightyjoeyg/

Surely making clothes can’t be that hard! Her favorite things to sew are doll clothes and doggo clothes. Tiny things are just too cute! In real life when she isn’t teaching at Abby’s Attic\, Samantha is a software developer. \n\n\n\nHannah Barton is a 2024 graduate from The University of the Incarnate Word\, having majored in Fashion Design. She started sewing as a senior in high school through her theatre department working in costuming. She has been an instructor at Abby’s Attic since 2023. \n\n\n\nCarla Santiago is a 2025 graduate in fashion design student at The University of the Incarnate Word. Her favorite color is purple. Carla has been an instructor at Abby’s Attic since 2024. Being surrounded by others who share her love for sewing makes her sewing journey even more exciting.

There is not a famous master whose music I have not industriously studied through many times.” \n\n\n\nWe will break down specific elements used in songs across different genres\, then apply those principles through hands-on exercises in class and at home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructors \n\n\n\nPeter Schmitz is a guitarist\, composer\, and songwriter who recently moved back to the 757 area from New York City where he performed in various groups. SUMMARY:Postcards & Places
DESCRIPTION:Collect the Moments. Tell the Story with a Postcard Journal. \n\n\n\nFor many of us\, life gets measured in places lived\, roads traveled\, and memories collected along the way. Some are packed in boxes. Some are tucked into drawers. And some still live on old postcards and photographs we just couldn’t throw away. \n\n\n\nIn this creative workshop\, you’ll use postcards or personal photos to create a meaningful postcard journal filled with descriptive writing\, reflections\, and memories tied to places and experiences that stayed with you. Whether it’s a hometown\, a favorite trip\, a duty station\, or a season of life\, this workshop helps turn snapshots into stories. \n\n\n\nParticipants will leave with a finished postcard journal and the skills to continue creating future travel or memory journals on their own. Please bring at least three postcards or 4×6 photos. No writing experience necessary—just come ready to create\, reflect\, and have fun. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructors \n\n\n\nSarah Colby enjoys writing poetry of place and is currently working on a manuscript of poems gathered from more than 30 years as a military spouse and mother. She currently lives in San Antonio\, Texas with her husband (recently retired Army Chaplain)\, one cat\, and occasional visiting grandchildren. She mentors veterans writing groups\, teaches in community outreach programs\, and finds inspiration in high desert landscapes. \n\n\n\nSarah has an MFA from UNR Tahoe (formerly Sierra Nevada University). She has been published in a number of journals and anthologies\, including Arts Alive San Antonio: Poets Respond; Texas Poetry Calendar\, Proud to Be Anthology Series Vol. 9\, easing the edges: a collection of everyday miracles\, and The Ekphrastic Review.
