SUMMARY:Getting Started on Your Memoir
DESCRIPTION:This four-week class meets Saturdays\, 10 AM-12 PM\, on Saturdays\, April 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25. \n\n\n\nWe human beings are storytelling animals\, and everyone has a story to tell. In fact\, each of us has many stories—our lives are made up of events and experiences\, families and relationships\, and oh! the memories we hold. Memoir offers us a way to capture and share our real-life stories. \n\n\n\nIn this four-part class\, we’ll explore the heart of memoir writing: discovering which story wants to be told and finding the best way to tell it. Through engaging in-class exercises and relaxed free-writing sessions\, you’ll put pen to page (or fingers to keyboard) and begin bringing your experiences to life. You’ll learn fiction techniques that make stories sing—description\, scene\, character\, and setting—and discover the many ways to structure your unique narrative. \n\n\n\nBy the end of our four weeks together\, you’ll have identified the story you most want to tell and the approach that suits your voice and style. Best of all\, you’ll do this within the welcoming\, friendly space of our workshop\, where we’ll share ideas\, support one another\, and celebrate the courage it takes to tell our truths. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the instructor \n\n\n\nJudy Reeves is an award-winning writer and teacher who has published four books on the craft including A Writer’s Book of Days and Wild Women\, Wild Voices\, and a memoir\, When Your Heart Says Go. SUMMARY:Playwriting for LGBT+ veterans & family members
DESCRIPTION:Join Frontlines of Pride\, a seven-week playwriting class that meets on Mondays\, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM\, on February 16\, 23\, March 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, and 30\, with a graduation performance on Saturday\, April 4th. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re proud to invite veterans and military-connected individuals who identify as LGBT+ to join us in this playwriting class where participants will develop original plays that explore the intersections of identity\, service\, and creative freedom — all in a supportive and affirming environment. \n\n\n\nThroughout this course\, you’ll move from idea generation to public performance. You’ll learn foundational story structure\, create loglines that capture the heart of your play\, and develop rich\, multidimensional characters. We’ll explore how dialogue can drive action and reveal emotional truth\, and you’ll receive guided feedback through multiple rounds of revision to strengthen your script. \n\n\n\nThe class culminates in a public staged reading of your work\, performed by local actors at Diversionary Theatre’s Cabaret Stage — offering you a powerful opportunity to share your work with an audience. No prior playwriting experience is required — just a desire to tell your story\, uplift others\, and connect through the arts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the instructors \n\n\n\nAlexander Ameen is a playwright and actor from San Diego\, CA. He will graduate this spring with an MA in Theatre Arts (emphasis in playwriting) from San Diego State University\, where he also received a BS in TV\, Film\, and New Media Production. Additionally\, he studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Alexander wrote and directed the short film War Torn\, which played in numerous festivals and received the Kathleen Kennedy Grant. His play Affected Place was developed through the Veterans Playwriting Workshop at La Jolla Playhouse\, where it received a staged reading. His new play The Stormy Present—a provocative and unflinching portrait of a modern military force at war with itself—will have its premiere at SDSU in May. He served as a journalist in the U.S. Navy\, and is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild. \n\n\n\nKylee Kyte (She/They) is an actor\, director\, and playwright originally from Salt Lake City\, UT. Kylee moved to San Diego to pursue an undergraduate degree from San Diego State University in Theatre and Social Work\, and will graduate this May. Kylee has written several short plays produced by V-Day SDSU\, and will be continuing her playwriting journey through a mentorship with playwright Stuart Voytilla this spring. Kylee is thrilled to be a part of the Frontlines of Pride Playwriting Class and cannot wait to see the beautiful work generated there. \n\n\n\nThis class is produced in partnership with Diversionary Theatre.
