What is dramaturgy, and how can it strengthen the stories you tell? This interactive introductory workshop demystifies dramaturgy by exploring it as a practical framework for making intentional storytelling choices.

Participants will learn the foundational principles of dramaturgical thinking and discover how it can deepen meaning, clarify structure, and strengthen audience connection across a wide range of creative practices. Using a familiar story as a shared case study, we’ll explore how different dramaturgical choices can completely transform the same source material. Through discussion and hands-on activities, participants will begin applying these concepts to their own creative work. No prior knowledge of dramaturgy is required – just curiosity about how stories are built and how thoughtful creative choices shape the way they’re experienced.

About the Instructor

Alissa Rose Gentry is a dramaturg, director, and experienced devising artist based in the DC-area. Her work centers around exploring the “why” of creating theater with and for local communities.
